What is dajare(ダジャレ) mean in English?
meaning
I think “Dajare” is similar to English “pun”.
Using similar words twice in one sentence to create a simple joke.
It’s very much in Japan as reference to “Dad jokes”.
Maybe the Boomers generation in Japan have gone thru so many dajare back in the day?
Maybe we (myself included) are not getting recent jokes; therefore, we still use “dajare” we learned!!
Example of “dajare”
ふとんがふっとんだ
Futon ga futton-da.
Futon got blown away!
*Japanese futon mattress and the verb blown away=futtonda are very close words. In regular verb=futtobu.
ハエははえー!
Hae wa hae-!
Fly is fast!
*hae=fly and calling someone fast=hae- (also, the adjective Hayai=fast)
カレーはかれー!
Kare wa Kare-!
Curry is spicy!
*Curry and the word spicy=Karai.
Do you know any more Dajare?
