ヨーダの英語術とは
スターウォーズのヨーダは知っていると思いますが、彼の英語にはある特徴があるのをご存知ですか？
それは倒置法を使い、逆に言う事です。
What’s great and different about Yoda’s English? It is the way he speaks. Often he will use this Inver-sing technique to make a phrase much more memorable and more emphasizing.
通常の英語であれば、
主語ー述語ー目的語という順番。
I like Star Wars.
という感じ。
ヨーダはこれに倒置法を用いる。
Star Wars I like.
という感じ。
Probably, no need to explain here but the way he put Star Wars first, emphasizing the movie title first.
it’s more poetic. I believe we learned this English in junior high school?? maybe…
There is also another way to use this inversion English by using How or What.
なんだか詩的な表現に聞こえる。これは中学生で習ったっけかな？
倒置法には他にもHowやWhatを使った表現も習っかな。
How great the Star Wars is!
なんてスターウォーズは良いんだろう！
What a great movie Star Wars is!
なんてスターウォーズは良い映画なんだろう！
普通にStar Wars is Great! やStar Wars is a great movieと言わずにこんな言い方をすると
なんかお洒落で知的だなー。
そう！これがヨーダの知識の豊富さや長く生きてきた故のカリスマ感をアップさせている。
実際に字幕だとどのように訳されているかは分かりませんが、そんな感じで伝わっていると嬉しい。
ヨーダファンの私にとっては、この喋り方が大好き度をアップさせている！
This is definitely making me love Yoda even more. Very fancy way and very poetic. But this speaking is making his profound knowledge to come thru and creating this aura or charisma. I hope Japanese people can understand this English It may be quite different with subtitles.

いくつかスターウォーズで出てくるヨーダの名セリフをリストアップします。日本語訳は私の個人的な訳しかたなので、実際の字幕のものとは違いますので、ご了承下さい。英語の文章にYOUTUBEのリンクを貼っておきました。

これは超有名なセリフ。「フォースと共にありますように」このYOUTUBEに載っているが、とにかくいろんな人が言う。僕にはヨーダのが一番良い。
Super popular. Not sure if Yoda started or not, but everyone says this! Throughout the movie.
Do or do not. There is no try.
これは私の大好きなセリフ。ヨーダがルークをトレーニングしている時に出てくる言葉です。「するか、しないかだ。TRY（試してみる）という事では無い」いやーまさにシンプルですが、刺さる一言ですね。いやー多分このシーンがスターウォーズの中でも一番好きかもしれないぐらい好きですね。
This is probably my favorite quote all time. This comes from the Jedi training with Luke. it’s super simple but exactly to the point!! I say this at work sometimes….hahaha. This whole scene must be my favorite part of Star Wars.

これは昔の弟子と対戦している最中に師匠からの一言。「まだまだ学びが足りないようだな」すぐ弟子の弱さを見切ってしまう余裕のヨーダがカッコいい。 This one is to the old Padawan of Yoda. He sees that incompetence immediately! That’s cool..
You must unlearn what you have learned.
これもルークをトレーニングしている最中にでる名セリフ。「今まで学んだことをまずは全て忘れるんだ」という訳でいいのかな。このUNLEARNという言葉がいい。日常使うことは無いが、要はLEARN＝学ぶの反対言葉。忘れると訳すのがいいのかわからないが、今まで覚えた事に慣れすぎて、新しい事が学べない時ってあるよね。レベルは低いけど、子供のジェイボードに乗る時に思ったね。スケボーは乗れるので、ついスケボーのように乗ろうとすると乗れないんだよね。まさにルークの気分！
This is again the same scene from Jedi Training. I like it a lot! Who uses the word “UNLEARN”? No one but Yoda! Cool. This reminds of the time I had to get on this Japanese J-Board. It’s like a skateboard, but it’s totally different. I put a link for those don’t know. Anyway, I can sort of skateboard, but when I tried to J-board, I basically had to Unlearn my skateboard skill. Yes, I wish Yoda was there to tell me that before I got myself injured!

これもルークへの言葉。Last Jediの映画で出てくるルークがある程度歳を重ねた上で言う言葉である。「失敗ほど良い先生はいない」うーん、何だかこの訳しかただと深みがないな。失敗は成功のもとでもないし、やはりこれは英語だからいいんだよね。あと、倒置法になっているのもいい。この失敗する事を先生と言ってしまうあたりが良い。
This came in the Last Jedi Movie. It’s to Luke again. I am probably not translating well. but you get the idea. I love he uses the word Teacher. it’s a person? no…but it’s kinda is.

これは将来ジェダイを目指す子供達をみての一言。「なんて素晴らしいだ、子供の心とは」なんだかこの訳し方だと深みがなくなってしまう。やはり英語はいいな。
This is to the young kids who are in Jedi Training. It’s so true that kids are so creative and pure! I feel the same still with my 8 years old son!
